Hazel 20th August 2021

Peter was born on 22nd January 1941 to Florence and Frederick Mountford in St Alfrege’s Hospital, Greenwich, followed ten minutes later by his twin sister Joan. 1941 was the height of the London blitz and after their house was bombed Florence took the twins by train to Teignmouth where her other two sons, Ron and Don had been evacuated. After a brief spell in Nottingham the family came back to Charlton and Peter went to Blackheath Church of England School. Leaving at the age of 15, Peter, along with his sister, took a job at the Royal Arsenal Co-op store in Woolwich. Here he met and became good friends with Mick Hookway. At 16 Peter gained an apprenticeship with British Gas. It was during this time that Peter developed his love for motorbikes, both riding and taking them apart, starting with a Francis Barnett and later moving on to an AJS, a Matchless and a Golden Flash. Mick, Joan and his brother Don would go out for rides and even his mum would be game, travelling in Peter’s sidecar. He’d meet up with fellow bikers to watch the motorbike racing at Brands Hatch, tearing out onto the nearby roads afterwards, imagining they were on the racetrack themselves. When Mick Hookway started dating Pete's sister, little did Peter know that this would lead to his own future happiness. At Mick and Joan's wedding he met Marion Davy, Mick’s next door neighbour. Peter “the greasy biker” asked out Marion “ the grammar school girl” and the rest, as they say, is history. They married on 18th June 1966. Their first child, Angela was born in 1969, Peter was incredibly proud, his sister remembers how excited he was to share the news with her. Much to Peter and Marion’s delight a second daughter, Hazel, followed a few years later triggering a move to Kent to a bigger house in Orchard Avenue, Aylesford. Family was very important to Peter, he kept in touch with his siblings regularly and visited his Mum in London as often as he could. Hard working Peter was promoted to a gas supervisor. This transition was a tricky time for Peter as he enjoyed being a gas fitter and the new job meant a lot more responsibility and paperwork but as ever he persevered and had the respect of his colleagues. When Peter developed epilepsy, he was disqualified from driving for 2 years. This was hard for him as he had transferred his love for motorbikes to a passion for cars, avidly reading new car review magazines. Once medication had controlled his condition he went back to his obsession, changing his car every couple of years, much to the amusement of his family and friends. Peter was a member of the bowls club but his main hobby was DIY in his home. He loved decorating, being a fixer upper. His training as a gas fitter also included accreditation in plumbing and electrics so he was able to tackle most tasks. A generous man Peter was always happy to lend his skills to his fellow neighbours. At the age of 52 Peter was given early retirement from the Gas Board. He then promptly found a job at a local clothes warehouse and reliving his youth, bought himself a scooter to travel there. His next door neighbour and friend John Weed then asked if Peter was interested in being his builder’s mate. Despite being in his 60’s Peter jumped at the chance. He loved working alongside John. Peter's joy for motorsport never diminished. He would often go with his daughter Hazel to the Goodwood Revival Meeting and the BTCC at Brands Hatch. He was lucky to win VIP tickets to the final of the championship, the prize also included a drive around the track by racing driver, Colin Turkington. For his 65th birthday Marion gave Peter a 1963 Matchless motorbike to rebuild. It came in a number of boxes. All the neighbours came to witness his bewildered smile as Marion removed his blindfold to reveal his new retirement project. Peter was forever being told to “slow down” and even when he came out of hospital after breaking his neck in 2020, he couldn’t sit still. Up to the end he was still mowing his lawn, painting the garden shed and driving his family around. A loving husband and devoted father, he was proud of both his daughters and couldn’t do enough for them.
